Fine Dust Particle Accumulation

Problem:

An industrial, low temperature, cold-storage facility had a heavy continuous amount of fine dust particles that accumulated on all exposed surfaces in the facility, including the stored product. The existing evaporator units located in penthouses on the roof conditioned and circulated the air throughout the facility. The velocity through the evaporator units was approximately 725 FPM and used heavy prop-style fans with little external static pressure capability. The customer had used a MERV 8 polyester media temporarily, and it was turning completely dark in three days while allowing the majority of particles to pass through.  As a result of the additional pressure drop and loss of airflow, the filters were required to be changed every 3 days.

Solution:

V-FACE™ housings were provided in a 4’H x 8’W x 2’D bolt-on section on the inlet side of two evaporator units. Each housing consisted of 2 rows of 4 each V-Cell style holding frames which held a total of (16) 24”x24”x4” MERV 13 high efficiency mini-pleated type filters. Upon start-up, the initial clean pressure drop across the filters (as indicated on the newly installed magnahelic gauge) was a phenomenal .17” WG at approximately 670 FPM. The customer was extremely pleased and placed an order for eight more housings to complete the project.  A regular change-out schedule has now been established at a remarkable 3 month interval.
